Before U2 became an international embarrassment they produced pretty good music – The Joshua Tree was the soundtrack to many of my teenage years. So the park has always felt iconic, even if a little tangentially.
On a recent trip to Palm Springs, we spent a day hiking through The Joshua Tree National Reserve. The scale, the landscape, the vastness – all spectacular, with the snow covered peaks of Big Bear in the distance framed by the geographically unique trees.
In mid-winter the temperatures climbed to the high 20s (Celsius), so it felt like the right time to go. I’ll be back to climb – there are hundreds of bolted routes – and camp. And we passed two women on horseback, which would be a brilliant way to cover ground across the huge reserve.
